Interesting review on African Colours of the Who Knows Tomorrow show in Berlin:
”… Far from claiming to represent or, even less, appropriate current African art production, the exhibition is instead dedicated to leaving monuments of German history to artists of another continent, raising the question as to what and whose history is narrated and written down …”

Sotheby’s to Sell The Robert Devereux Collection of Post-War British Art
”Discussing the reasons for selling his collection, Robert Devereux states: “Art has always been an obsession of mine. I started buying art in my teens and have always bought what I loved and always been led by what emotionally and visually stimulates me. Over the last few decades I have, more by default than design, created a collection which I love but which has grown rapidly in size, particularly in the last few years. I have, therefore, been grappling with how best to move forward. Last year I decided to establish a charity devoted to supporting the arts of Africa, a continent where I now spend a great deal of time and which has huge potential but very few resources to support its burgeoning talent. Art, Africa and philanthropy have now all come together for me and I plan to use the proceeds from the sale of my collection to launch The African Arts Trust.”

@katrin so what’s new on the African art scene?
- Katrin Schulze · 3 months, 3 weeks ago
that’s mean, you’re putting me on the spot … forcing me to admit that, despite working on a PhD in ART history I’ve not been to any exhibition recently because I’m too busy with my thesis – if you ever met my supervisor, seen how scary he can be, you’d understand …
but as the spot light’s on me now: I might go there:
African art? Between the real and the imagined: a panel discussion
[Thursday 3 June 18.30, BP Lecture Theatre, £5, concessions £3]Listen to leading artists discuss how their work has been influenced by African culture and how it engages with the traditions of African art history.
Panel speakers:
*Raimi Gbadamosi, contemporary British conceptual artist, writer, and Honorary Research Fellow at the Slade School of Fine Art. His work investigates the complexity of social and cultural politics, often challenging views on ethnicity, race and culture.
*Ibrahim El Salahi, Sudanese British-based artist El Salahi is best known as a pioneer of modern African art. His Arab-African heritage is reflected in his work by his creative use of elements drawn from Sudan’s literary and visual heritage.
*Sokari Douglas Camp, Nigerian-born British sculptor. She predominantly works in steel and her sculptures refer to her Nigerian roots and international issues. In 2003 she was shortlisted for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square for her proposed work, NO-O-War No-O-War-R.Big names, eh? … and as its my birthday, maybe somebody wants to invite me?

Raimi Gbadamosi sounds vaguely familiar….The exhibition i really want to see is any of El Anatui’s – Anyone able to turn ”bottle tops” into pieces of art is not only making an ”artistic” statement but a subtle environmental one as well….it seems though to me that its mostly the ”old” guard doing stuff like that. I wonder if there are any young contemporary artists coming through doing similar stuff (sculpting, installation etc) like El Anatui does?
Happy Birthday Day by the way
about the invites – becareful what you wish for

I’m a good student, you know – obviously I was hoping to be invited for the talk, I don’t even dream of a life outside African arts (uni, museums and talks like this one)
but in all seriousness, I’ve seen the work of one of El Anatsui’s students at a gallery in Abuja – I actually first thought it was an El Anatsui … but I guess its not yet coming over, isn’t it? though it might be keeping an eye on the October Gallery …

I’ll need to introduce you to a Ghanaian artist called Fatric Bewong. i did a feature on her recently. http://www.myweku.com/2010/05/fatric-bewong-on-her-exhibtion-hearing-the-skies/
she wanted to know how to find out residencies etc internationally….not my area i have to admit. her exhibition was about ”transforming” sounds/music into works of art on canvass……
